White Lightning?
Our Lightning Flask is named for the swing-top bottle closure called the "Lightning-type" closure. Some historians believe the use of the term "white lightning" for moonshine stems from the use of lighting closured jars to by bootleggers to bottle their product (Dave Hinson, 2002). Lightning-type swing closures were most popular on beer and many soda bottles from the 1880s into the 1920s. Beer and Soda you ask? Well, Kentucky is not only known for its Bourbon.
Louisville has a rich history in beer making, dating back to the late 1700’s. The Steurer’s even made beer … Jacob Steurer founded his brewery in 1866 and at its hay-day produced 6,000 barrels of Common Beer.
Today craft beer distilling is on the rise. There are quite a few Kentucky microbreweries around the state, and more are popping up all the time, creating a new standard for what beer should be.
And what about soda … Ale-8-One is a soft drink unique to the state that has been bottled in Winchester, Kentucky since 1926, and is the only soft drink invented in Kentucky still in existence. Today its sodas are sold in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama.
