In 1785, Madison County was established from land given by Lincoln County and is the sixth county in order of formation. Madison County is named for Virginia statesman and political theorist, James Madison, who later became the fourth President of the United States. He is hailed as the "Father of the Constitution" for his pivotal role in drafting and promoting the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

George F. Will once wrote that if we truly believed that the pen is mightier than the sword, our nation's capital would have been called "Madison, D.C.", instead of Washington, D.C.
