Edison Composition Cover

Our Edison Composition Cover is named for Thomas Edison who came to Louisville in 1866, at the age of 19, to work as a telegrapher for Western Union. He worked the Associated Press bureau news wire on the night shift which gave him time to spend on his two favorite pastimes—reading and experimenting. This was his ultimate demise as one night he spilled sulfuric acid onto the floor which ran between the floorboards and onto his boss's desk below. The next morning Edison was fired and left town.

Some of Edison's earliest inventions were related to telegraphy, including a stock ticker. His first patent was for the electric vote recorder in 1869, but the invention that first gained him notice was the phonograph in 1877.

Sixteen years after leaving Louisville, in 1883, one of Edison's new inventions, the incandescent light bulb, was demonstrated in the largest installation to date in Louisville at the Southern Exposition.

Thomas Edison House is a historic house located in the Butchertown neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. The house is a shotgun duplex built around 1850. The house features a museum that honors Edison and his inventions.
