A luxury overnight bag to explore your uncharted territory ...

The Jefferson Overnight bag is named for Jefferson County which was formed in 1780 and named for future President Thomas Jefferson and Governor of Virginia at the time. The county is one of the first three counties formed out of the original Kentucky County which was abolished in 1780, when it was divided into Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln counties of Virginia. These later petitioned together to separate from Virginia, which was approved by the Virginia House of Delegates. In 1792 the Commonwealth of Kentucky was admitted to the United States as its 15th state.

President Jefferson, anticipating further westward settlements due to the Louisiana Purchase and arranged for the exploration and mapping of the uncharted territory. He appointed Meriwether Lewis and William Clark leaders of the Corps of Discovery (1803–1806) which In the months leading up to the expedition, Jefferson tutored Lewis in the sciences of mapping, botany, natural history, mineralogy and astronomy/navigation, giving him unlimited access to his library at Monticello, which included the largest collection of books in the world on the subject of the geography and natural history of the North American continent, along with an impressive collection of maps.

Lewis and Clark met near Louisville, Kentucky, in October 1803 at the Falls of the Ohio and before departing later in the month, the core "Nine Young Men" were enlisted into the Corps of Discovery. Their goals were to explore the vast territory acquired by the Louisiana Purchase. According to some historians, Jefferson understood he would have a better claim of ownership to the Pacific Northwest if the team gathered scientific data on animals and plants.
